Reflections Of Rodney

I know, I know, another day of Hampton. Well, there will be many more ahead til I get caught up with all of my drafts.

Today's add came from Jammin JD Sports Cards.

Surprisingly, with as much Score 1995 football I bought back in the day, and it was a lot, I never pulled one single Reflections insert. Back when grocery stores actually carried cards, 1995 Score was always stacked and I always bought. You would think with these only falling 1:36 packs, or one per box, I would have at least landed one. But, no such luck.

So luckily for me Jammin JD Sports Cards had one available of my guy Rodney so I got to once again take another one off of the checklist. This insert featured a upcoming star running back and paired them in comparison with an NFL star.

The upcoming player was the spotlight on the card while the comparison was in a mirror as his "reflection".
These cards look much better then the version being put out today. Isn't that the way with anything that gets revived?

Too Low For Zero

I don't discuss my music likes on here very often, but I will touch base today some on one. I know most bloggers or readers expect the usual heavy metal/rap/hard rock/alternative songs that most bloggers/readers like, but that's just not me.

I am more of a 90's pop/love song, Paramore, Christopher Cross, Eagles, Duran Duran, Hootie And The Blowfish, Chicago, Dave Matthews Band, Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Elton John kinda guy. There are many others I could list but gave you a very short rundown as an example.

I have never been a fan of screaming and yelling songs or songs with language even though I did go through a rap era for a couple of years in 2000-2001. As I have gotten older, I tend to appreciate the songs that I grew up listening to on the radio or heard my parents listening to.

One of those guys is the one and only, Sir Elton John. A little while ago I saw that Autograph Blog had a TTM address for Elton and I knew I had to jump on that. My father listened to Elton all of the time and the one cassette tape we had and played a million times in the car on our way to card shows was Too Low For Zero. That tape had big hits such as, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues and I'm Still Standing.

So I wrote Sir Elton a letter and explained my fandom to him, in return, I got this pretty cool mail day all the way from UK,
Disappointingly however, is the fact this is a copy which is what the letter states as Elton didn't have time to sit down and sign photos with so many letters flowing in. I think this is a cool piece coming from where it came, but it was quite what I was looking for in terms of nostalgia. So I have sent another letter to the same address requesting it once again. We will see this time if I can score one or lose out again. (update:I mailed this out in October and have yet to hear back. I am hoping that is a good sign)

I still listen to Elton's old and new music today. And of course I picked up Too Low For Zero on CD and listen to that as well to bring back those memories.

I am only guessing, but one of you guys must have a favorite Elton song, so what is it?

My Beckett Era Ends

For over 20 years I have been a loyal Beckett subscriber, but this year, that will come to an end.

There are many reasons for my decision.
  1. A lot of the same information in the magazine I can find myself online.
  2. It feels as if nobody uses the price guides anymore. Everyone I trade with doesn't use Beckett for trading values and that's what I would find most handy.
  3. The magazine has gotten ridiculous expensive. What used to be $24.99 is pushing $40 a year now. That's too much for me.
  4. It's not just the price that has changed, the magazine has as well. It's not the fun one I once read in the 90's where they had Readers Write, Big Pulls from collectors and felt like it was more of a community based.
  5. The ads in Beckett where I used to look for local card shows are un-useful now as I have no shows to attend and no LCS' to see in there either.
It's a sad ordeal in some ways for me as Beckett has always been apart of my collecting. But, as the times change, I guess it's time for me to make some changes as well even though I am still very old fashion in my collecting styles.

How many of you still subscribe or use Beckett in any way? Let me know what you use and how you use it in comments!

Is He In Your Starting Lineup?

Now in my Starting Lineup, is the second card I needed from Starting Lineup of my man Rodney. I didn't think I was ever going to land them both but lucked out.

Just by the looks of this one, you can see this is an obvious early 90's card. Well, it is, 1992 to be exact. Easy pickup for $1. I am always happy to add cards to my PC cheap when I can.

Before you ask, yes, there are more Hampton posts on the way!

Big Blue Collections: You Thirsty?

Big Blue Collections is a segment that showcases non-card items in my NY Giants collection. This is the first and only time this segment will appear on here.

Today's piece is a total 90's throwback. A water bottle I assume is from the early 90's just by looking at the design and logo. I found this item in my Christmas stocking back last December from my sister-in-law. I never complain about adding new pieces to the Giants PC. I prefer cards, but, vintage type items are cool too.

I tried to capture a couple of angles of the bottle.

I assume this was one of those items you find in an oddball store like a dollar store but I am not sure about that. Sometimes those kinda stores have items you never will see again and that's why when I find them personally, I get them.

Odds are I will never use this item and will mainly keep it for showcasing.

Dual Refractor

Rodney is back!

Only three more Rodney Hampton posts remain in my drafts so we will kick it off with another sweet addition thanks to Jammin JD Sports Cards.

This is a 1994 Stadium Club Bowman's Best Dual Refractor. I have owned the base issue for awhile but not the refractor version. These weren't the toughest finds falling at 1:12 packs but but it was a deep checklist so finding ones you needed may not have always been easy.

This dual is of Rodney Hampton and Errict Rhett.

Since You Been Gone

A lot of my focus this year has been on grabbing TTM autographs of celebrities. I find that my success rate is much higher with them vs athletes and with my growing love of non sports, it also helps add some cool pieces to my PC.

One of my more recent TTM requests was of Kelly Clarkson. The very first American Idol winner who has gone on along with Carrie Underwood as the most successful and biggest named winners from the show. She is also the daughter-in-law of Reba. Just thought I would throw that tidbit in since my wife is a huge Reba fan.

I sent out a request for Kelly's autograph not sure if I would get a return. I am not that creative when I send out my requests as all I usually have to sign is a white filler cards. Of course in Kelly's case, I do own a couple of CD's so I could have mailed out an insert from them and used that. My fear would be not getting it back and my CD OCD would kick in knowing that my CD insert was missing.

I waited for a few weeks and to my surprise, I got this back in return.....
Very cool!
A thanks goes out to Kelly for hooking me up with this autographed photo and to Autograph Blog for the address. If you haven't checked out his blog for addresses, your missing out. Great resource for the hobby.
