REVIEW:2016-2017 Totally Certified Basketball Box 1

Many of us 90's collectors will remember the Totally Certified brand and how excited we were when Panini announced they were bringing it back.

Well, it back again for another year on the hard-court.

How did my break go in Box 1 review and my thoughts, well, read on!

In every box of 2016-2017 Totally Certified basketball, you will find 8 packs with 5 cards per pack. There should be 1 autograph and 2 memorabilia cards to find per box. Panini has played with the amount of hits per box, packs, etc for years now trying to figure out what's best. I actually liked the one-hit-per-pack deal on these. Boxes this year run you around $80.

The base cards look great. They are silver and embossed with a squiggly background design. The base set is 140 cards deep featuring players also on their new teams. 100 of those will be star players while

40 are rookies. I think you will find about one rookie per pack on average making it not easy to land top stars with only 6-8 per box.
This years parallel cards look absolutely stunning. Not sure how many of you saw have seen a Fleer Metal PMG with the reflective shine it gives, but these do the same. Probably the best mirrors they have ever put in the product.
Mine above are red #d to 199, but you can also find Blue #/99, Orange #/60, Camo #/25, Gold #/10, Green #/5, and Holo Blue 1/1.

Staying with the product layout, Franchise Foundations are also embossed and have parallels.I pulled a blue of Leonard and red of Butler. There is also, Orange #/60, Camo #/25, Gold #/10, Green #/5, Holo and Blue 1/1.

Once again, Energizers and Return To Sender stay true to the overall product. They are embossed and have Red #/199, Blue #/99, Orange #/60, Camo #/25, Gold #/10, Green #/5, and Holo Blue 1/1 parallels. I really liked finding the John Starks one and Energizers looks really cool.

2016-17 Panini Totally Certified Basketball

Up next, Calling Cards featuring players and their most known "calling card" in the league. These also have parallels of Mirror #d to 25.
Time for the hits.

Fabric Of The Game is a staple throughout the Certified brand name. The rookie and veteran designs are different. This is what you will find with the rookie and

this is what you will find with the veteran. Panini has played with the design of Fabric Of The Game over the years as well. I tend to like the words written out with the embedded fabric. These designs aren't bad as they all look good on this surface.
And my autograph hit from the box, a Rookie Roll Call autograph. Another standby autograph set in Totally Certified. These are signed on-card. It's just too bad it's of a player assigned by the Magic to NBA development league and not even a guy currently in the NBA.
Other hits not found in my box are, Draft Day Ink Set, Representatives Autographs Set, Rookie Autographs Set, Signed, Sealed, Delivered and Totally Certified Materials Set. All materials have prime parallels which I bet look really good on this design.
Overall, my box was a bit of a tough one. I didn't pull any top tier rookies, my hits were a little below par. I only found 4 parallels which were higher numbered ones.

If just based on design, the product is a winner. However, this box wasn't.

Tomorrow Box 2 will be posted. Will it be better than Box 1, well, come back to see. There will be a giveaway too.

By the way, make sure you thank Panini America for this review box and check out their site for products like this one and others. Also thank Tracy Hackler and give him a Twitter follow too!

Mail Day Saturday: Very Psyched, Another One Down!

Thanks to my buddy over at 90's Niche Football Card Blog I have finally knocked another one off of my needs for my Psych autograph set from seasons 5-8 and he also helps bring back the exciting return of Mail Day Saturday.

Nestor Carbonell guest starred as Declan Rand who was a criminal profiler.
Nestor also played in Lost and was the Mayor in The Dark Knight movie series. He is currently on Bates Motel TV series.
I should also note that this card is a variation with the symbol he drew on it. Added bonus!
With this addition and others on the way, I currently sit only 2 away from completing this set with a few more updates to post on here. That's quite a milestone for me if I can finish this up. However, two of the final ones won't be too cheap ($35-$50 range) to complete it.

REVIEW:2016 Bowman's Best Baseball+GIVEAWAY!

If you grew up in the 90's collecting world, I just know how excited you were to hear that Topps had revived the Bowman's Best brand last year. I know I was.

For those collectors who missed out on that era, I believe your first time experience will be just as exciting as us who collected it back then. It may actually want to drive you to go back and try some from that era as well to compare.

So let's check out what the 2016 version has to bring us and shows me since I missed last years relaunch.

In master box of 2016 Bowman's Best baseball, you will find 2 mini boxes. There are 6 Packs Per Mini Box with 5 Cards Per Pack. There are two autographs to find per mini box and one atomic refractor to find per master box. Master boxes will run you less than $100. Not a shabby price.

The base cards are chromed, that alone should hook you, with a blurred top background and a team logo across the middle.

It is a small base set made up of 65 cards with most of it compiled of rookies. Meaning only stars in the base set too.

Rookie cards include all of the top ones like Albert Almora, Gary Sanchez, Michael Conforto, Luis Severino, Aaron Nola, Trevor Story, Miguel Sano, Blake Snell, Lucas Giolito, Nomar Mazara, Julio Urias, Corey Seager, Jose Berrios, Jameson Taillon, Kenta Maeda, Michael Fulmer, Willson Contreras, Tyler Naquin, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber.

As with other Bowman products, you gotta expect that Prospect insert. This is a 35 card set made up of upcoming prospects and the design is similar to the base other than the "card tear design" running the opposite way.

Onto the inserts that should take you back.

As expected, refractors are found. Even with this product, the word refractor can be found on the back as a tribute to the 90's. The only part I didn't like about it, the word refractor wasn't found on them all including....

The atomic that falls one-per-master box.

Or even on these. But, even though refractors are obvious, the wording is fun and I wished more consistent. The Betts is a green and the Goldy is a blue I believe.
Other parallels to find are...
  • Gold Refractor: sequentially numbered.
  • Orange Refractor: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • Red Refractor: sequentially numbered to 5.
  • SuperFractor: numbered 1/1.
Whoa! These not only look awesome, but took me way back to 1996. There are 30 cards in the set made up of prospects and veterans and legends, except my main guy Griffey.

Parallels for these include....
  • Atomic Refractor Parallel: sequentially numbered to 25.
  • SuperFractor Parallel: numbered 1/1.
Mirror Image brings you back to the 90's as well, especially to 1996 where I just picked up a few of them. I will show those later on! Some great player selections on here of veterans and prospects that should "mirror" them.

Parallels for these include....
• Orange Refractor – /25
• Superfractor – 1/1

Stat Lines reflecting on the most notable performances of the Baseball season, with current veteran and prospects.
Other inserts not found in my box are....

Baseball America Presents Prospect Forecast is focused on the leading prospect publication, Baseball America, that projects call-up dates for the game's biggest prospects. There are also Orange Refractors numbered to 25 and SuperFractors numbered 1/1.
The autograph checklist is loaded full of on-card auto finds. It makes the product even better. I didn't pull any of the insert autographed cards, but I did get four of the Best of 2016 Autographs.

These also include parallels such as this orange (looks super sharp) and
• Refractor
• Atomic Refractor – /25
• Red Refractor – /5
• Superfractor – 1/1
Other autographs in the product and not in my box include:
1996 Bowman's Best Autographs (I have seen images and WOW), Dual Autographs, Bowman Choice Autographs, AND look for low-numbered autograph parallels of the Stat Lines and Prospect Forecast with their respected parallels.
OVERALL, my break wasn't super strong, but I have seen some that were. There is a lot to offer in this product and with four autographs per box and the price being under $100, I think it's worth a gamble on. The checklist is pretty deep for prospects, rookies, veterans and a few legends that even though you won't hit it big with every break, but there is still that chance.

Also, if you can't afford a master box, see if you can get a mini box to give you a taste. Then decide from there.

Now time for the giveaway!!!

Iconic Childhood Designs Part 1:1995 Score Football

This new segment takes a look at some of my favorite designs from my early years of collecting. These are designs I will never forget and when I see them, they will take me down memory lane.

1995 Score was affordable, had a nice looking base set (though not action packed) and some superb inserts and parallels.

I can't even begin to remember how many packs of this stuff I opened back then. Felt like tons. I spent time chasing NY Giants, my favorite rookies and the parallels. I think I almost had a base set at one point. There was just something with the base that had me wrapped around Score 1995. Maybe as a youngin' it just had eye appeal. I can't explain it.

The base set had a featured player in the forefront with a "ripped" corner that featured the team logo. If a player had changed teams, it would feature the new teams logo in the corner and the player in the previous teams uniform.

Even the subset was fun..Star Struck gave certain players a Hollywood appeal as "fans" or players were reaching out for them in the limelight. I was happy when I had found all of these.

Rookie cards looked neat. Like a child had drew the design, a cool squiggly one, as rookies came tearing up the middle....of the frame in the card. My excitement for the rookies was mainly focused on Kerry Collins who was drafted by the expansion Carolina Panthers with the 5th overall pick. After I found him in a pack, all was good. I felt giddy and accomplished as it was my biggest pull. I think I now own three to five of them and don't ask for one, I am not letting them go!

I also miss the times of NCAA being in an NFL product if it was released before or just after the draft. Better than those plain colored helmets and jerseys or the dreaded 00 jerseys.

Up next, checklists, yes checklists even had me excited in the product. Nothing was wrong with finding one. Helped me collect one more card of a favorite player while trying to figure out what I was missing from the set. (I could never cross it off on the card physically as that would be destroying it. I made a separate list)

Red Siege parallels were cool and fun to find in packs and the odds weren't too tough either. You knew you had pulled one with the base all white. There were Artist Proof versions to find as well.

Other than parallels, there were inserts to find as well, but the base and the Red Siege were the cards that always stuck out most to me in 1995 Score. I think the Elway Red Siege above was my best pull of the parallel set that was pulled in the last few years. I don't think I ever hit the "jackpot" as a kid.

What do you think of 1995 Score football? The design? You ever bust any or have any memories of it? Let me know in comments!

My Griffey Generosity Project Experience

One of the cooler ideas in the hobby was just recently launched, the project is called, The Griffey Generosity Project.

This project was started by famous The Junior Junkie who has one of the biggest and best Griffey collections I have seen. He details more about the project HERE if you haven't heard about it.

I was fortunate enough to be the first one to see what the project is all about. It's actually a pretty simple concept. Take what you need, put in your own of what you don't such as your doubles. The point of the project is to help yourself and others build up their Griffey collections.

It's also a much cheaper way of adding to your collection as you only pay for shipping the box forward and unload those doubles you may not have anywhere else to go with.

So let's take a further look at the project.

Here is the outside of the box. It is well decorated with M's and Reds and other baseball related stickers.

The inside cover contains The Junior Junkie's contact info and a paper about the project and a place to make comments and let others know where the box has been.
Under that cover I decided to stick this there as a welcoming face to what's underneath.

Then under that, boom!! Lot's of Junior to be had. I wished I had taken a picture before I started to sort them a bit. I still need to add a few of mine in. I don't have as many as I would hope to add due to the fact I usually send off my doubles into trades most of the time without the person knowing. I guess it's my calling card. But, I still am adding what I have into the project as that's what it's all about, giving back to the Griffey collecting community.
I hope the box will be ready soon to move onto the next collector who I have alerted and let The Junior Junkie know about. The holidays put a delay on me looking through the box and digging out my doubles. I will say however, the box was quite helpful for my collection filling in a few gaps and I will show off my Top 10 favorite card adds from the box at a later date.
A big thanks to The Junior Junkie for letting me experience this first. I think this project is an excellent idea and I look forward to seeing how many Griffey collectors it reaches and how much it helps everyone. I know how close this Griffey collecting community is and that everyone will do their part to help each other out.

Christmas Break Part 2:2016 Prizm Football Jumbo Pack

In my second break, I busted my first 2016 Prizm football.

Since there is no more football Chrome, this is my chromeified option now. It's not a bad thing as I like Prizm, but I still always had my chrome soft-side.

Each of the Prizm hangers come with a 3-card red-white-blue prizm pack. Mine wasn't the best of players, but Prosise has shown some promise backing up Rawls in Seattle. The Green Prizm of Ervin in this group I pack pulled.

Another Prizm I pack pulled was Nkemdiche. the Peterson is pretty slick looking too in Illumination. That also has the Prizm refractor shine.

And my best find of the box, a Rookie Introductions of the most likely ROTY, Zeke. Card not only looks great but it has a shocking $25 BV too. I need to find myself the Giants from this set.
Overall, not expecting any cardboard and finding some was nice. Having a decent pull in each was even better. The eBay gift card wasn't a huge amount, but it was enough I was able to pull him some pretty cool cards that I will show off at a later date.

Thoughts on my break today and yesterday welcomed in comments!

My 2016 NFL Notes And CONTEST!!

Wanna win this card? Well, going to try and give it away again.

With a terrible showing by the Giants yesterday, this card still remains in my hands and I know someone wants to own this of a possible future superstar.

Before the contest announcement, first MY 2016 NFL NOTES:

As many of you know, I am very passionate about football. I am in two fantasy leagues finishing 5th in my personal one just missing the playoffs by needing one Beckham catch. Finished 3rd in the TSCP league with just a Terrence West start away instead of playing Forte like I did. First time ever not winning or being in the championship for those.

I am in 3 NFL Pick Em leagues. Never won in the 2 involving cards all year and finished my season with the worst yet in both. Even the local one I just won in Week 17, scored 14/16 games and 3 points off, I am going to finish over 100th place out of 300. Very poor but at least I won in it for the first time ever in my 10th year of entering. Free pizza for me!

My Giants finished 11-5 and made the playoffs. They got a pretty decent young team going into next year to add more pieces to. Just need a TE and definitely some oline. Could be a great 2017. #GiantsPride

And finally, my passion for football runs so deep, I SO BADLY WANT THE PATRIOTS AND COWBOYS to lose that I am giving the card, possibly more, away above to celebrate when and if they do. It would be the worst possible Super Bowl match-up for me if they both make it. I can't find a team to route on in that case and would hope for a tie. I will give two cards away if they both lose this weekend to two different winners.

So how do you win the card above for now.

Instead of a random, I just want you to give me a guess in comments the numbering of this card out of 3250. You can just copy and paste from last weeks answers if you want, but you must comment on this post in order to be entered. A Patriots or Cowboys loss and the person closest to the numbering without going over will be the winner of the Bosa!

Other quick rules:
  1. ***VERY IMPORTANT***MUST BE A U.S. RESIDENT to enter or have a shipping address in the U.S. Shipping costs have gone haywire and I can't afford to ship everywhere. This is always hard to do as I appreciate all readers but I hope you all understand non-U.S. readers.
  2. Card may be shipped PWE. I like to forewarn on this.
  3. Winner will be chosen IF the Cowboys or Patriots lose and the winner will be chosen by the person closest to guess of the numbering of Bill Mueller card /3250 without going over.
  4. Sport Card Collectors or it's owner (person who runs the blog), WILL NOT be held responsible for lost, stolen or damaged mail. Sorry had to add this in since someone tried to scam me once about this.
  5. Contest starts today, ends on January 13th 2017 by 11:59 pm e.t.. Winner will be announced in a separate post on January 16th 2017 IF either lose.
There will be another contest if only one loses, but this will carry over if both win.

Christmas Break Part 1:2016 Topps Baseball Series 2

I am a bit behind on posting this, but for Christmas this year, I wasn't really expecting any form of cardboard, but to my surprise, I did find some under the tree along with an eBay gift card.

Best surprise ever.

The pack choices weren't shabby either. A Walmart jumbo pack of 2016 Topps Series 2 baseball and 2016 Prizm Football Walmart jumbo pack.
I thought it would be fun to showcase my pack breaks since each had a pretty decent pull for a Walmart pack.
Up first, 2016 Topps Series 2 baseball.
A couple of rookies.

Inserts with some good names. Can't ever go wrong finding Trout in a pack.
The Kid! A new Griffey addition. Would love to build this set still.

And now my decent pull /50 and found at 1:82 odds. Pink A-Rod.
Pretty solid for a Walmart pack in my opinion. I will show off the Prizm break tomorrow so stay tuned!

Trio Of Signatures

Today's post was supposed to be the exciting return of Sunday's With Rodney with some of my newest Hampton collection additions, but instead, I will put a delay on that til next week and highlight the trio of Giants rookies this year making an impact on the team as it gets ready to play the Green Bay Packers today at 4:20pm.

This is a trio signature featuring those great draftees of Paul Perkins, Sterling Shepard and Eli Apple who each have contributed helping lead the Giants to their first playoff game in 5 years.
This card just came to me from a contest I won on Twitter from @BeckettRadio who ran a ton of Christmas and New Years giveaways. It's 19/25 and is from 2016 Donruss Signatures a product I didn't get to open. This is by far my best card I have of these three rookies from 2016.
A big thanks goes out to @BeckettRadio for the contest and card. If you haven't checked them out or their show on the hobby, go give em a follow and do so!
Also I gotta say many thanks to my Twitter followers who threw my name into the hat to add this card to my collection. I appreciate you all immensely!!!
