Griffey's New Number, 23

Like I stated last week, when it comes to Ken Griffey Jr collectors, we are all family. We want to help each other out when we can and that's exactly what Griffey collector @ryanwsawyer24 on Twitter did.....AGAIN.

In his last mailing, he added my first game used baseball card of The Kid, this time, he added another new memorabilia card I have been looking to have and a lot of other goodies.

I will admit before you read on and view the images that my camera didn't do the best this time capturing the pure goodness here. But, I hope you can see them well anyways.

First up, Star. Very yellow like a bus. I don't own a single one of their cards. Also added my first sportflix of Ken other than a checklist.

A few more oddballs in this group I haven't seen before. It's always good to knock those off the list.

Classic with a design I can only picture would be used in the beginning theme song of Saved By The Bell. Especially the 1990 yellow one.

The Moeller card I really liked. Classic shot of Ken's famous smile.

Pacific card from Ken's milk chocolate bar line. I wonder what those actually tasted like. All I know is companies saw something good and promoted it to no end.

And we reach the memorabilia card I have really been wanting to add, a game used glove. This one is a batting glove. REALLY COOL! Upper Deck was the king of baseball card innovation!

A big thanks goes out to @Ryansawyer24 again for his generosity in helping make my Griffey collection a bit bigger with these 23 new adds. Yes, that's how I got the title for this post haha. I really appreciate it! Go follow him if you haven't yet and see his Griffey journey as he tweets!

HOBBY TOPIC:Player Collecting By Team

Here is how Hobby Topic works if you don't remember (you gotta keep this in mind as the return of Hobby Topic makes it way back)
Leave a comment or thought below on the following.

Today's Topic is Player Collecting By Team.

When you collect by player and that specific player left for another team, do you collect that player just for the one team you originally was chasing him in or do you chase them all?
Please make sure it's clean for our younger audience.

My Favorite Card Of 2016

When I saw the contest over at Eamus Catuli blog for Favorite Card of 2016, I said, that's easy. Then I actually thought about it. No, no it's not.

With so many trades and so many box breaks and eBay pickups how could I ever narrow it down to just one????? How did every blogger narrow it down to just one? Even my base card pickups in 2016 were just as big as my hits. It made it a bit easier to narrow down by the fact the card had to be produced in 2016 as a good portion of my pickups were older.

But, still, there was a lot to sort out.

After much back and forth, I went with the play of this guy this season and the Giants finally making the playoffs after a 5 year drought,  Not to mention, it's shiny and my only autograph memorabilia card of the guy.

I am still happy I was able to trade for this from 90's Niche Football Card Blog.

So what was your Favorite Card Of 2016?

Padding The Vintage

My Tuesday was full of fun mail days including the one I posted yesterday and one that I am posting today (among a couple other really awesome eBay pickups). It was the most packages I have gotten since Christmas.

Today's posting comes from a contest win from @RJDUB81 on Twitter. Another good guy I suggest you follow.

Up first, some bad pics. HaHa. When the lighting hits the plastic top loader magic doesn't happen on my camera phone. Needs to be the right lighting and I was in a bit of a hurry to get this up so it wouldn't be weeks out.

But, I think you can see them still. I will do my best to summarize.

There is base of Langoria, Rice, shiny refractor of Tulo and The Kip Wells is die cut and numbered. It's a pretty sweet card.

Then comes some 90's goodness. Always loved the Hot Commodities design from UD. I didn't have the Smoltz so it's plus. There is a Rickey Henderson from Leaf, a Frank Thomas for my SI For Kids collections and a Fergie Jenkins base. But, its very shiny.

This David Justice card is simply awesome. It's a 1999 Fleer Metal Molten Fusion. Something I haven't owned or seen up close. Another plus to my 90's insert PC.

Hold it up to the light and it's even cooler.

A Fractal Matrix parallel I have never owned but now do. A plastic version. I always had the bronze or bronze die cuts. Never one like this. Pretty stoked to add this to the 90's PC. I always appreciate a nice 90's insert that's also numbered. A time when numbering, even to over 3,000, meant something. Go ahead and try looking some up.

Now onto some vintage. A part of my collection that is very, very weak as my collecting started in the 90's and the focus has always been then til now. But, when I have an opportunity to add to the vintage part of my collection, I am on-board. I have picked up a few from yard sales before.

We start it out with a nice oversized Brooks Robinson.

(I must also note the above was supposed to be the end of the contest win, but @RJDUB81 being the good guy he is, threw in a ton of vintage bonuses in)
Then we move onto many more from a variety of years.
Other than being a part of cardboard history and extremely collectible, vintage is also fun for the pictures they use. Some are great, some are ones I am sure players regret now. I bet if some people came upon these, Memes would be made.

Dick Donovan appears to be saying, "You talkin to me?"

This Mel Roach one was one of my favorites. It appears he is from the movie Psycho or is watching you out his window.

Not that the Johnny Romano is much better. He looks like a bad guy off of Dick Tracy.
No matter the picture however, I am super excited to pad my vintage collection a bit more. I didn't have any of these. The other fun part of vintage were the classic designs, feel and miscuts on the borders. Just adds to the history of these.

Someday I hope to add a vintage Mantle of some-sort and want a card, no matter the player, older than 1952. Preferably something 1933 or older.

A big thanks goes out to @RJDUB81 for this awesome lot. I really appreciate it all of it and it all fits nicely in different PC sections. I sometimes think I PC way too much, but, who's complaining??
As I stated above, I suggest you give him a follow as well.

Something To Harp About, An #ActOfChristmasKindness Contest Mail Day

Every year my wife and I do many fundraising and donations for a variety of things. Putting others first before ourselves is something we strive for.

So every year for Christmas, we donate brand new baby clothes to the local hospital for newborn babies. Even with the financial struggles of 2016, we continued our tradition of doing it.

@Mike_McKenna on Twitter was hosting a contest wanting to know what #ActOfChristmasKindness had everyone done. Up for grabs were some 2016 Topps Chrome base card variations, that are actually cool looking refractors, just for letting him know your deeds of kindness. I had mentioned the baby clothes as my #ActOfChristmasKindness and was chosen as a random winner. Not that I needed anything for doing a good deed.

As a winner, you were getting mailed one of the variations not knowing ahead of time what you were getting. I honestly didn't mind which one I got as it was generous of Mike in the first place to give back to those who give and as I said earlier, not that I needed anything in the first place for what we do.

However, I will admit after opening the envelope yesterday, I was a bit giddy about getting Bryce Harper out of the cards that were up for grabs. He is one of the faces of MLB and seems to be a good guy on and off the field which I really like in a player. The picture on this card tells that story.

The card is also very shiny and everyone knows my love of shiny objects. My camera on my phone didn't do a very good job of capturing the cards shine.

A closer-up picture.
A big thanks goes out to Mike for this amazing card. It will be something that I will always treasure and hold onto and remember the reason behind it. If you are not following him, @Mike_McKenna, I suggest you do. Good all around dude.

Wrappers Of Collecting Past: 2001 Upper Deck Legends Of New York

For some reason over the years, I found myself hoarding empty card wrappers. At first it was to use for crafts (I put them in my binders for decoration), but now I simply think I collect them. Some may have memories attached, some may not. Either way, I thought it would be fun to post em to take you and myself back in this new segment.

I will leave some kind of comment for each. Some may be more than others if there is an attached memory. So I hope you enjoy this trip back in time and this new segment.

Today's pack, 2001 Upper Deck Legends Of New York.

I never actually opened any of this product surprisingly. I did pick up a box of full of singles off a yard sale that came with the wrapper. The cards are focused on legends of New York, no surprise there, and the team names and logos on the card are outlined in felt. That part is cool.

How about you, got an fond memories of this product?

2017 Topps Collector Of The Month Winner (Other Prize Shipping Updates)

Time to announce the winner of the one-time Collector Of The Month. I still am in a bit of a daze/disappointment over not seeing more entries. I thought for sure a lot more bloggers would enter as well along with many others that usually enter my contests. It was going to be epic.

But, it was just the way the cookie crumbled and I did appreciate those that did take a minute out to enter.

So here is the winner.....

Congrats to Tracy L for taking home the win with scoring more than 50% of the votes. Silly me pulled the polls before I copied and pasted them into this document. But, I am sure the other contestants saw the significant lead he had and continued to have over the two days.

Tracy, please email me at with your address or just simply DM me on Twitter to claim your prize within the next 48 hours.

Once again, thanks again to those that entered. New contests coming up soon!

UPDATE ON PREVIOUS THREE WINNERS FROM OUTLANDER AND UFC MUSEUM: All prizes have been packaged up from the last few contests before this one. I am still waiting to get to the post office so hopefully by weeks end. Sorry for the delay around the holidays

Should Old Be New Again?

As I continue sorting cards from the past and present, I start to see more and more of the designs I grew up collecting making a return. So it got me to it better to leave these sometimes iconic designs alone or is it good to see them again?

Products like Fleer Retro

Topps Archives

And Topps Heritage revisit designs of the past with putting players of today (in Archives they take players of the past and put them on today's designs) on them.

I sometimes think this a great idea while other times I prefer for those designs to be left alone and be remembered the way they were. I think one thing that turns me away is the feel of the cards as today's version may look the same, but the card stock and surface are not usually.

However, like I said, I am up in the air on how I feel about this. Because honestly, it is sometimes cool to see my favorite players of today being on some of those older designs I grew up collecting or remembering.

Then there are the other times where I am thinking, just leave that design alone! It was done once, it has it's place in cardboard history, don't ruin it or the memories I have attached to it.

Then I may feel, wow, Mike Trout on 1991 Topps, Cool!

So what do you think, should a design only be used once or do you like seeing it revisited in today's hobby world? Which side of the fence are you on with this or are you like me?

Hobby Resolutions 2017

It's that time of year again, time to make New Years resolutions. Hopefully some that I can stick to, at least hobby wise even though weight loss is always on the top of everyone's regular list no matter your shape and size. So that may be on top of my regular one............again.

Anyways, here is my "I hope to stick to and focus on" Hobby Resolutions of 2017.
  1. Finish my Seasons 5-8 Psych Autograph set (this is the top of list knowing how close I am)
  2. Add more cards to my Griffey collection, at least 100
  3. Add more cards to my Hampton collection, at least 50
  4. Continue posting once a day on here with some new ideas mixed in
  5. Get my HUGE box sorting project complete
  6. Sort my binders or start to
  7. Highlight and complete my Griffey checklist
And that's gotta be it. That alone is a lot to tackle and I hope I can stick to it.
What are some of your hobby resolutions for 2017?
