Review: Panini Limited Football 2013

Box Break Down:
  • 1 Pack Per Box, 7 Cards Per Pack
  • Three Autographs/Memorabilia Cards Per Box
  • One Legend or Phenom Per Box
  • One Insert or Parallel Per Box
  • $90 per box

BASE CARDS: A remade base card design that is very well done. As always it's done of foil board and this year has added bronze and black color. Every base card is numbered and base cards, Legends and Phenoms makes up the base set
The back of the card has statistics from last season along with a small writeup.

INSERTS: A refractor type parallel named Spotlight looks really nice against the base card design. You will land one insert per pack/box.

New to this years insert lineup is Field Vision which is a unique insert in which Panini added acetate to the players visor on their helmet.

AUTOGRAPHS:  The makeover continues in the product with it's much improved MATERIAL PHENOMS that Features a new design with oversized swatches and autographs. We lucked out and got a nice Patch in ours.

We also lucked out by getting a low numbered to 10 Edgerrin James auto in our box. The Monikers autographs are made up of a wide variety of players and superstars. We were quite excited with the autograph hits in this box.

You can also find Cut autographs in the product. We didn't land one, but you can find them of 20 different legends, including Red Grange, Pete Rozelle and Sammy Baugh. And we should also mention the return of ROOKIE LETTERMAN which are authentic letters from NFL jerseys that are autographed.
JERSEY/PATCH CARDS:The Limited Threads is basically the base card done over with a jersey card swatch.

You can also find GAME DAY MATERIALS PRIME which are game used cards Taken from specific events that highlight some of the NFL's best players. And of course there are Prime Parallels to find as well.. Also can't forget the MATCHING NUMBERS PRIME Pairing two of the game's notable names material from players who wear or used to wear the same jersey number.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Design is nice, the hits could be there, and they did a great job on the remake. The only glaring problem could be the price. It feels a little steep for 7 cards. But, if you are a high roller and like products that you can gamble on, we recommend this for you. So many great hits can be found. But, if you are conservative and want something that guarantees you a big hit, this might not be the product for you. However, this was a fun one to bust not knowing what could be hidden behind every card.

Review: Press Pass Redline Racing 2013

Box Break Down:
  • 2 Packs Per Box, 10 Cards Per Pack
  • Two Autographs Per Box
  • Three Race-Used Memorabilia Cards Per Box
  • At Least One Autographed Memorabilia Card Per Box
  • At Least One Multi-Swatch Memorabilia Card Per Box
  • $115 Per Box

BASE CARDS:Redline has a nice base card design. A marble type bottom border with the Redline name standing out along with the drivers name just below the picture of the driver who appears to be coming out of a smoke bomb maybe its after spinning their tires from a win. Plain and basic but well done.

INSERTS:.Inserts are not plentiful here which isn't a bad thing. The harder it is to get an insert, the move valuable they will be. Here we got the guaranteed one insert which most fall 1:2 packs along with 2 base card parallels. One is the black and white numbered to 99 and despite the picture the Jeff Burton is a blue parallel numbered to 50.

AUTOGRAPHS:  On-Card Autographs! May we need to say more?! Well designed autographs. The Bowyer is a base card with an autograph but we like the size of the auto on the card. The Kahne above is a really well done card. They have a nice balance of driver/car/memorabilia and an autograph. Press Pass did great on that design. More companies should take note of that. We have seen some companies either have the players too small, team emblems too big or the auto and mem pieces just don't fit where they are placed. Kudos for Press Pass for finding that balance.

JERSEY/PATCH CARDS: The many pieces that Press Pass uses in their racing cards is an automatic win. They are very creative using Sheet Metal, Shirts, Hats, and many more. Most of these pieces you can see have been used and you will not question the authenticity. And some of the pieces are really sweet prime ones such as the Kahne above.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: You don't have to be a HUGE NASCAR fan to appreciate Press Pass racing cards. Design is nice. Memorabilia is creative. And on card autographs. Press Pass continues to put out very nice racing products with every release. It's hard not want to give one a try.

Have You Ever Considered Quitting The Hobby?

The question is Have You Ever Considered Quitting The Hobby? And I bet the simple answer for any collector would be yes. We all hit that lull, that moment, where we question ourselves...Can I afford to keep collecting? Is this hobby as interesting as it used to be? I don't know what to collect anymore so why am I collecting? The hobby isn't as strong as it used to be, should I get out before it's gone?

The bigger question when those ones pop up I think is, can you carry on past those questions and continue collecting? Recently, these questions popped into my head again. Especially the final one. I have seen quite a few collectors in the last few weeks either in a lull, giving it a "break" or just straight up quitting because they can't afford it. These kind of things are a red flag to me and sometimes makes me rethink about continuing on.

Even with cool cards like this on the market, you still sometimes get the thoughts about quitting

However, even though those thoughts pop up in my head about the hobby, I always seem to find a way to carry on and move past my doubts. Why or how you may ask, well here are few tips that I use.
  1. It's a hobby I have come to know and love for the past 20 plus years. I Think back to when I first started collecting and what got me into it. Believe me, it helps. And sometimes brings that passion back. And it may even slap in you the face for asking you why those thoughts came up.
  2. I try to find different things and ways to keep me interested whether that be collecting different players, re-sorting (and we know how that can go), blogging or simply just reading a Beckett to look at product previews, reviews and even the price guide. There are many, many options in a hobby like this. Maybe even collect a new sport. You just never know what you will find or like!
  3. I, just like everyone else cannot always afford the hobby, so what I do to wet that appetite for wax in the meantime til I have money, I enter contests. No, you may not win every one, but at some point you will win at least one. Maybe even go on a hot streak!
  4. For pack opening when you are not winning contests, I may pick up a few retail packs here and there especially if they are on sale to keep the collection growing and to keep my sanity for opening up packs. No they are not as glamorous as hobby, but it's something to tame that pack wanting. And most retail packs you can find under $2.99.
As for the hobby not being as strong anymore, obviously it's not in a tech world. But, this hobby has been around forever and though I fear someday it may not be here if we don't find a way to get younger generations interested, there is a voice in my head that comforts me and says, "My son, don't worry, this hobby will continue on no matter what. There will always be collectors." I sure hope that voice is right. And we can only help it continue on by getting cards into kids hands. If you are helping getting cards into kids hands, that may help you take some of the doubt away knowing that you are helping to keep the hobby you love alive.

I hope some of you who consider quitting will take some of these suggestions as a way to carry on. Because if us collectors now cannot get past these thoughts and do we expect future collectors to and for the hobby to continue on?

Box Break Of 2011 Timeless Treasures Football

Broke a tin of Timeless Treasures Football 2011 over the weekend as an early Christmas present. When I first opened this product a couple of years ago, I didn't care much for it. But, now that I have busted tin number 3, the product has grown on me. Was hoping to find a Kaepernick or Cam Newton auto under the tree, but didn't. However, did enjoy what was pulled.

Each Tin contains 1 Autographs #ed to 499 or less and 2 Memorabilia Cards#ed to 250 or less. You might hit two autos but out of three breaks this is what we got. You will also find that each base card is numbered as well.Only 5 cards per tin!

The Tin serves both as a house for the cards and a collectible display

Base Card

Insert parallel

The Game Day Souvenirs feature actual game date photography and game-used memorabilia. That's awesome!

I really like these white leather autographs..well done design too

Overall, no huge hits. But the Rookie Signatures is cool. And I have always been a fan of Pocket Hercules.

Let us hear your thoughts on this break!

Seattle @ NY Giants

Here is our Thirteenth entry into the NY Giants/Panini America Promo Contest!

All you have to do to enter is comment with the Total Points for this game without going over. Remember that cards only get added to the pot if the Giants win this game. However, you can still "win" for the week either way. The person with the most "wins" at the end of the year wins the pot.

The Week 12 of our contest victory goes to @rjdub81 who guessed the score right on with 51 when the total of the Giants/Chargers Game was 51. With only 2 games left in this contest will be interesting finish!

Well, yesterday's game wasn't even a game. With the loss no cards have been added to the pot so we still sit at 7 insert/rookie cards. Giants have also officially been eliminated from playoff contention. So we will sit back and enjoy the final 3 games of the year and count down to next year!

NOTE: We are shortening it up. Contest ends now after Dec 22nd matchup against Detroit. Lack of entries and interest in this contest and NO playoffs for the Giants is the reasoning. But because we are ending this early we will be throwing in 2 extra cards to the pot!

Here are the updated standings:

Zac Smith                               3 WIN
JJ HERNANDEZ                   2 WIN
@rjdub81                               2 WIN
Mrblu1976                             1 WIN
Thomas Young                        1 WIN

Scott N.                                 1 WIN
Dennis                                    1 WIN
aa8a5804-8a87-11e2-ad83-000bcdcb8a73 1 WIN
JAMIE B                                1 WIN
Whitley Gilbert                        1 WIN

Help The Hobby Less Fortunate

I am always someone who thinks about the less fortunate and as the holiday season creeps upon us I think about it even more. So I have a challenge for all of you who read this during the holiday season (even after). Go and help the less fortunate. There are many ways to help that wouldn't cost you a dime. Spend time with the elderly at nursing homes, volunteer at soup kitchens and churches, help the homeless and donate your unused food or clothing items. And if you are fortunate enough to help with money make donations to local places that hand out toys, food and clothing during the holiday season. Believe me, every penny counts.

I would also like to challenge you to help those who are Hobby Less Fortunate. What is that you may ask, it's for those who may not be able to afford the hobby, don't know what the hobby is or just sending a collector something because you appreciate them.

Here are ways you can help:
  1. Donate those base cards that are just collecting dust in your house to great organizations like Cards2Kids or Commons4Kids. You can also go to your local Children's Hospitals, local churches or just find places where you can hand some out. And remember it can be more than just base cards. Let's get more cards into peoples hands especially during the holidays. And more than likely we all have some cards just sitting around.
  2.    Send another collector a surprise package consisting of their favorite players and teams. You can leave it anonymous if you happen to have their address on hand so it's a surprise or just contact them and tell them that you have a little something you wanted to give them.
  3. Pay It Forward. If someone does something nice for you, pass it on. That's a great way to spread cheer!
  4.  And it's really important to remember our soldiers overseas. They are doing so much for us and the least we can do is a little something for them. There are a bunch of soldiers who collect overseas. Send them a nice care package of unopened packs or get involved with a card company such as Upper Deck (who does a lot of pack sending overseas) and work with them on it. Show them we are thinking of them!
Most of these challenges won't cost you much and when it comes to helping others, the joy and cheer you will receive is priceless. Let us know if you take on our challenges and send us some pictures if you do so. We would love to see what you are doing to help others and to help others in the hobby.

Have a great holiday season, Merry Christmas and remember to help those less fortunate!
